Get Cycling curriculum resources

About this activity

Suitable for Key Stages 2 and 3.

NB: We’re bringing together all the TfL education programmes, including STARS, under one exciting new umbrella programme called TfL Travel for Life. They will be the same great programmes but with a new name and a new look, easier online process and dedicated support team. STARS for primary schools will be renamed TfL Explorers. STARS for secondary schools will be renamed TfL Pioneers

Use the Get Cycling curriculum resources to encourage your pupils to cycle to school and raise awareness of cycling’s benefits to health and the environment.

The resources provide lesson plans and worksheets for literacy, geography, maths, science and PE, design and technology, music, French and history.

The resources are themed around the Tour de France and Tour of Britain. They also focus on Prudential RideLondon and encourage pupils to take part in the annual Free Cycle that is part of the event.

As well as the subject area specific lesson plans and pupil worksheets, you will find additional activities designed for your TfL Explorers Ambassadors , or other groups of pupils, to deliver.

Pupils can complete the activities in class or as part of an after school club, or cycle club activity, for example.

Download the Get Cycling resources.

How to evidence your activity

Add your story to the TfL Travel for Life  website. Explain how you used the Get Cycling resources and add photos of the lessons in action, copies of completed worksheets and pupils’ feedback.

Activity steps

1
Download resources
Follow the link in Resources to download your own copy of Get Cycling. Read through and decide which lessons are best for your pupils and share ideas with the respective subject teachers
2
Coordinate
The resources work well when cycling-themed lessons take place around the same time. You could work with your colleagues to deliver the lessons during the Tour de France or the Olympics, for example
3
Check for success
Ask your pupils how they found the lessons. Did you manage to create a buzz around the idea of cycling?
4
Tell your story
Feedback to your borough officer and add your story to the TfL Travel for Life website
