Public transport promotion

Public transport promotion

About this activity

Suitable for primary and secondary school pupils. Supports the PSHE and Citizenship National Curriculum.

NB: We’re bringing together all the TfL education programmes, including STARS, under one exciting new umbrella programme called TfL Travel for Life. They will be the same great programmes, but with a new name and a new look, easier online process and dedicated support team. STARS for primary schools will be renamed TfL Explorers. STARS for secondary schools will be renamed TfL Pioneers.

Promote the use and benefits of public transport in your school to encourage positive travel behaviours and support pupils and staff to travel sustainably.

There are lots of ways you can do this, here are some ideas:

  • Include local bus or train routes or links to journey planning sites on your school’s website
  • Display local bus information on your school travel noticeboard
  • List public transport information in new pupil joining packs and communications to parents at the start of the school year
  • Share the environmental and health benefits of public transport use, including Air Quality benefits

What you’ll need

  • Up-to-date bus information
  • A travel notice board in a prominent location in your school

Activity steps

1
Know your numbers
Survey your pupils to find out how many travel to school by public transport
2
Plan your promotion
Share the results with your borough officer and decide how you will promote public transport to pupils, staff and parents
3
Spread the word
Work with your TfL Explorers and Pioneers Ambassadors to promote public transport in line with your plan – this could be on your website, notice board or in the school’s newsletter
4
Check for success
Re-do your survey to see if there has been an increase in the number of pupils using public transport
5
Tell your story
Sign in to TfL Travel for Life to add your story and include pupils’ feedback. Explain the activity and add photos and any posters or promotional materials. Feedback to your borough officer
