Parent/carer involvement

Parent/carer involvement

About this activity

Suitable for all schools and nurseries.

NB: We’re bringing together all the TfL education programmes, including STARS, under one exciting new umbrella programme called TfL Travel for Life. They will be the same great programmes, but with a new name and a new look, easier online process and dedicated support team. STARS for primary schools will be renamed TfL Explorers. STARS for secondary schools will be renamed TfL Pioneers.

Parents/carers play a key role in influencing their children's attitude towards active travel and how they travel to school and in their spare time.

Ask parents/carers who travel with their children to identify any issues they encounter and share their thoughts on how they could be supported to travel more actively. You could also survey their attitudes towards certain modes of transport to help plan future campaigns. See our resources link for an adaptable parental/carers survey.

Work with your TfL Explorers Ambassadors and school travel working group to help plan and carry out consultations with parents/carers. Consider collecting information through questionnaires, online surveys, face-to-face interviews, coffee mornings, open evening stalls, a suggestion box in reception or informal chats at the school gate.

How to evidence your activity

  • Involve your borough officer: Share your ideas, agree your targets and discuss any challenges you face
  • Record the feedback from parents/carers
  • Sign in to TfL Travel for Life to add your story. Explain your activity and include copies of any surveys, consultations, suggestions and responses
