About this activity

Suitable for all schools. Supports the Art and Design National Curriculum

NB: We’re bringing together all the TfL education programmes, including STARS, under one exciting new umbrella programme called TfL Travel for Life. They will be the same great programmes, but with a new name and a new look, easier online process and dedicated support team. STARS for primary schools will be renamed TfL Explorers. STARS for secondary schools will be renamed TfL Pioneers.

To mark World Children’s Day 2019 and to celebrate the power of children to change the World, Unicef and Transport for London (TfL) want your school to show and tell us what makes public transport great for children in the capital.

We are asking children at Unicef Rights Respecting Schools and TfL Travel for Life schools to create a design that will feature on the iconic TfL roundel and/or write a message for the TfL Thought of the Day boards. The winning artwork and message will be displayed at selected London bus and Underground stations for everyone to see.

Inspiration for children’s design might come from ideas like:

  • Transport issues affecting London’s children – like road safety, active travel and air quality.

  • How public transport helps children realise their rights to education, leisure and play, as well as helping to protect our environment.

  • What makes public transport great for children in the Capital. That might be getting the best seat on the top of the double decker bus, whizzing through the tunnels on the Piccadilly line to your favourite museum, or watching London landmarks fly by your train window.

The children can use whatever medium they prefer felt tip marker pens, poster paint, collage, whatever inspires them.

For the roundel, please only draw inside the ring.

Activity steps

1
Decide the level of involvement you would like
Involve your School travel working group, engage and involve the whole school community; pupils, staff and parents. Contact your borough officer if you require any support.
2
Launch the competition
Discuss in class what pupils enjoy about travelling on public transport. Do they enjoy the freedom it gives them or feel passionately about how it helps the environment?
3
Get Creative!
Download the design templates and print them A3 to give plenty of space to design. Use whatever creative materials inspire you but ensure the design is 2D.
4
Pick your winners and ask for permission
Once you have your shortlist for submission, download the permission from the resources links and ask pupils to return their completed forms to you.
5
Submit your entry
Entries for this competition will no longer be accepted. The competition closed on November 1.
6
Tell your story
Sign in to TfL Travel for Life to add your story and include pupils’ feedback. Explain the activity and add photos and any posters or promotional materials. Feedback to your borough officer
