The Big Walk and Wheel

The Big Walk and Wheel

About this activity

Suitable for primary and secondary school pupils. Supports the PE National Curriculum.

NB: We’re bringing together all the TfL education programmes, including STARS, under one exciting new umbrella programme called TfL Travel for Life. They will be the same great programmes, but with a new name and a new look, easier online process and dedicated support team. STARS for primary schools will be renamed TfL Explorers. STARS for secondary schools will be renamed TfL Pioneers.

Since Sustrans Big Pedal started in 2011 it has grown to be much more than a cycling competition.

Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel is the UK’s largest inter-school walking, wheeling, scooting and cycling challenge. It aims to inspire hundreds of thousands of pupils to get active on the school run. This year's challenge will take place from 11th March to 22nd March 2024.

During the two-week challenge schools compete to record the greatest number of pupils walking, using a wheelchair, scooting and cycling to school, whilst learning about the benefits of active travel along the way.

The interactive school resources are designed to be fun, flexible and inclusive to all.  Ensuring that as many pupils, staff, parents and carers as possible can take part.

Any active journeys taken from home or physical activity completed at home can be counted as one journey in the challenge for pupils learning remotely.
