Pool bikes and scooters scheme

Pool bikes and scooters scheme

About this activity

Suitable for primary and secondary schools.

NB: We’re bringing together all the TfL education programmes, including STARS, under one exciting new umbrella programme called TfL Travel for Life. They will be the same great programmes, but with a new name and a new look, easier online process and dedicated support team. STARS for primary schools will be renamed TfL Explorers. STARS for secondary schools will be renamed TfL Pioneers.

A pool scheme allows pupils who do not have access to their own bike or scooter a chance to get involved in activities such as Bikeabillity trainingbiking at break and bike maintenance skills sessions.

Running the scheme

You can use the pool bikes and scooters in a variety of ways. For example, keep them for on-site activities only, or set up a loan scheme allowing pupils to take the bikes and scooters off school premises for a week or over the weekend. You will need to organise a booking system to keep track of where the equipment is and how it’s being used.

To fund the pool bikes and scooters scheme and storage space you can either use your school’s own funding streams, or speak with your borough officer about TfL funding.

Activity steps

1
Check your options
Speak with your head teacher and borough officer to find out your funding options
2
Set up a system
How will your pupils access the pool scooters and bikes? Set up a system to effectively monitor use along with a log sheet, risk assessment, booking and consent forms (see Resources)
3
Launch the scheme
Invite pupils to test out the new bikes, explain the rules and ask them to share their ideas for cycling activities they’d like to do
4
Maintenance
Regularly check the number and condition of pool bikes and scooters. You could link this with bike maintenance sessions (see Resources)
5
Check for success
Ask your pupils their opinion on the new scheme. Has it been used by those that don’t have access to bikes at home?
6
Tell your story
Sign in to TfL Travel for Life website to add your story and include pupils’ feedback. Explain the activity and add risk assessments, photos and any posters or promotional materials. Feedback to your borough officer
