Go for gold!

There are three levels of TfL Travel for Life accreditation: bronze, silver and gold
The level your school achieves depends on:

  1. How successful you have been in reducing car use and increasing sustainable travel
  2. How many travel activities you complete

Bronze

Start your journey towards a safer, healthier school environment

What you need to do

  • Within one academic year complete 10 different travel activities and 6 supporting activities
  • Set at least two active travel targets to see a movement away from car use

Silver

Engage with wider school community to influence travel behaviours; start to see a shift away from car use for your pupils, parents/carers and school staff.

What you need to do

  • Within two academic years complete 20 travel activities, 10 supporting activities and 5 consultation activities
  • Provide evidence for each completed activity
  • Demonstrate a shift away from car use
  • See pupils actively involved in the planning and running of travel activities

Gold

Join over a quarter of London schools setting high standards to inspire others to transform travel habits, fully engage the wider community to promote best practices, and see a measurable reduction in the number of journeys made by car every day.

What you need to do

  • Within three academic years complete 25 different travel activities, 15 supporting activities and 8 consultation activities
  • Provide evidence for each activity completed
  • Demonstrate at least a 6% modal shift away from the car or at least 90% of pupils travelling actively

Get started on the road to accreditation

Once you have received email confirmation that your school's online account has been approved, get in touch with your borough officer to talk through the next steps. They will help you decide which activities are best for your school, identify issues and set targets for the year ahead. They can also support you to write a School Travel Plan (STP) if you don’t already have one.

Explore lots of ideas for activities you can do at your school from advice on setting up a school travel working group to running TfL Explorers Ambassadors and Zigzag line enforcement. Activities are completely adaptable for your schools and pupils needs.

There are over 125 activities to choose from, all of which are included in the activities menu, an easy guide to the criteria you'll need to apply.

Tell your story and inspire others

To gain TfL Travel for Life accreditation you will need to tell your story for each activity your school delivers. To do this, sign into your online account, select the activity from the list and click on ‘Tell your story’. You can include photos, posters, newsletters, risk-assessments and other relevant documents to show how your activity worked. You can then publish your story in the Stories section to share your achievements.

Make sure you submit all your evidence to be assessed against the accreditation criteria at the end of the school year: your school will be considered for an accreditation award at bronze, silver and gold level.
