Independent travel training
Our story
Focus this half term after SATs on independent travel training for Year 6 prior to their transition to secondary school. The Chair of Governors (who is CEO of a local Academy Trust) visited the class to talk about the importance of safe independent travel. In dedicated lesson times, working in groups, the Year 6 pupils plotted their routes from home to secondary school. Three different local secondary schools were selected and the class divided into 3 groups who then trialled routes using public transport supported by the class teacher or teaching assistants; the groups later wrote up their experiences and shared these in assembly. Certificates and badges will be presented at the Awards Assembly in July to those in the class who have achieved the highest percentage of active travel across the academic year and also to those who have shown strong leadership skills in preparing themselves for independent travel from September.
