As part of our promotion of active safety, we wanted to demonstrate the importance of road safety to our students and particularly how technology can be distracting. We therefore teamed up with the PE department to put on a road safety obstacle course, which students would complete once without distraction and a second time whilst reading a book to imitate reading a text message. Both times were recorded and compared so that students could see how much of an impact this had on their performance. At the end of the session students commented on how they made sure to go slower when completing the obstacle course with the book and this helped them to realise how straightforward tasks are made more difficult.  From a quick hands up survey, all students said they would remember the outcomes of this session the next time they are out walking.
