Air Quality Monitoring
Our story
We wanted to monitor an improvement in the air quality as we try to encourage our staff and student body to reduce their carbon footprint. We carried out two investigations. Lichen and PM analysis. Our students found a high level of Nitrogen sensitive lichen around the school site, and little to no nitrogen loving lichen. This is very promising to us as it shows that we have low levels of nitrogen in the air around our school site. However, out students found quite a lot of PM on the various surfaces around the school site, showing a high level of dust and soot in the air. This is useful to know going forward as it means we can focus our activities on reducing the number of cars near the school site. We can use the health risks associated with particle matter as a lever to encourage staff and students to travel more actively.
