Independent travel training
About this activity
Suitable for primary and secondary school pupils. Supports the PSHE and Citizenship National Curriculum.
NB: We’re bringing together all the TfL education programmes, including STARS, under one exciting new umbrella programme called TfL Travel for Life. They will be the same great programmes, but with a new name and a new look, easier online process and dedicated support team. STARS for primary schools will be renamed TfL Explorers. STARS for secondary schools will be renamed TfL Pioneers.
Supervised travel training provides tailored and practical help for pupils to travel by public transport, on foot, scooter or by bicycle (Bikeability Training). It can help increase confidence and independence and allow pupils to participate more easily in social and leisure activities as well as travel to school. The length of the programme is dependent on the individual pupil or group and can range from weeks to years.
If you would like to set up an independent travel programme for one or more of your pupils, talk to your borough officer about local organisations with whom you can work in partnership. These may include local authority social services or transport departments and voluntary organisations.
