Outdoor Classroom Day
Our story
Our post 16 YTA group held discussions on how best to celebrate "outdoor classroom day" and finally decided on "litter picking" and pond dipping at the Litten nature reserve in Greenford. We walked to the site from school and immediately found some plastic, cans and other rubbish which needed to be disposed of. We talked with "John the ranger" and were able to help him to transport and scatter the new wood chip needed to maintain the pathways. We fished some litter from the pond and during this one of the students managed to catch a newt in her net. We all had a look then returned the newt to its natural habitat. On return to school the class did some online research into newts for the following lessons. Feedback from the students included "it was so nice to work outside."
