YTA Road Safety Challenge
About this activity
Suitable for secondary school pupils (Key Stages 3 and 4).
As part of the Youth Travel Ambassadors (YTA) Challenge programme, work with your YTA team to deliver a campaign to raise awareness of road safety and proactive ways to deal with safety issues that affect your school.
If your school isn’t already part of the YTA scheme, read the YTA activity card to find out how to sign up.
Contact your borough officer or YTA coordinator on [email protected] to get started. With their support and the best practice toolkit, your YTA team will learn about:
- Why young people are most at risk on the road
- How to identify road dangers
- The different types of distractions and their consequences
- How to make good decisions regarding road safety
They will then deliver an assembly to their classmates to raise awareness of road safety and launch their campaign to help everyone become a safer pedestrian.
The YTA Road Safety Challenge is made up of three sessions and can be delivered at any time throughout the school year.
What you’ll need
- Up to 12 YTAs
- Support from your borough officer or YTA coordinator
- A member of school staff to oversee and coordinate the challenge (this could be your school’s YTA Guide)
How to evidence your activity
- Involve your borough officer: share your ideas, agree your objectives and discuss any challenges you face
- Record the feedback from your pupils. Note how this challenge has impacted responsible travel at your school and how this has helped meet your objectives
- Sign in to STARS to add your story. Add photos of the YTA's campaign in action. Include pupils’ feedback and any promotional materials produced
This activity supports the Vision Zero target to eliminate death and serious injuries on London’s streets.
